“Bleak, dark, and piercing cold, it was a night for the well-housed and fed to draw round the bright fire and thank God they were at home; and for the homeless, starving wretch to lay him down and die. Many hunger-worn outcasts close their eyes in our bare streets, at such times, who, let their crimes have been what they may, can hardly open them in a more bitter world.”
Charles Dickens
“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, stated by Sherlock Holmes
“The Only Man Ever to Enter Parliament with Honest Intentions”
“Remember, remember, the 5th of November/ gunpowder, treason and plot./ I know of no reason, why the gunpowder treason/ should ever be forgot.”
On November 5 1605, Guy Fawkes and his accomplices intended to blow up the English parliament, including the king and most of the aristocracy, because “all this injustice is done to us in this place.”
They were caught and sentenced to death. They were strangled, gutted and quartered alive.
Four centuries later, Guy Fawkes became a symbol of general distrust of the political class.
